80th Anniversary

“For minds to think, and hearts to love, and hands to serve, we thank you, Lord.” From a Litany of Thanksgiving in the Book of Common Prayer

After the end of World War II, seven young mothers active in All Saints’ Church’s St. Margaret’s Guild organized a path-breaking Episcopal preschool that opened its doors to 20 pupils. Since 1946 the fundamental mission of the Day School has remained constant: to promote the development of the whole child, body, mind and spirit.

For 80 years, the Day School has been blessed with the leadership of innovative Heads of School, dedicated teachers, committed Trustees, and supportive families. It has survived and thrived by holding fast to its mission, while also adapting to dynamic growth and complex changes in society.

In 1955, the Day School occupied the newly built Gregg House with classrooms designed especially for preschool children. Under the leadership of Cindy LaPorte, the Day School worked to create a diverse and inclusive community. Tuition assistance was provided so that no family would be turned away because of financial hardship. After Cindy retired in 2020, the Cindy LaPorte Inclusion Scholarship was created to honor her legacy, and last year we welcomed our first full scholarship student.

Since 1978, the Day School has offered early care, an after-school program, and a summer program, to support the growing needs of families with two working parents. The Day School took a bold step forward in 1997 when it became the first stand-alone preschool in this six-state region to successfully meet and exceed the rigorous standards to become accredited by the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools.

Today, the Day School continues to strive to uphold its motto, “Minds that Think, Hands that Help, and Hearts that Love”, and places a greater emphasis on social-emotional development and outdoor, nature-based learning. In 2024, under the leadership of Gigi Khalsa, the school’s playground became a certified outdoor classroom through the nonprofit organization Nature Explore. In this 80th anniversary year, we want to go further and give this outdoor classroom a new design that can pique our students’ curiosity, develop their problem-solving skills, and foster a lifetime love of learning.

We invite you to join us in celebrating our anniversary with a gift to our campaign to raise “$80,000 for 80 Years.” Contributions of any size make a difference, and all funds will be used for a playground redesign and update that will inspire the children of today and tomorrow to live fully as their best selves.
